Oh god I would love to try and max out my Crown Vic on that since it seems that it needs like 10 miles of open road to get past 115mph lol

Eh. You wouldn't hit more than 88mph on that stretch!

See, that's why context is important. Where on earth but the US would you find roads like that? Here's what the roads around where I live look like:

Kinja'd!!!

The speed limit? 120 kph, but the bumper to bumper traffic usually flows at 100-110 kph and accidents like that happen all the time. People call it the Death Road.

And no, that isn't one single, isolated example, if you look at the left edge of the photo, you'll see another road, smaller and narrower, and it's just about as busy as this one.

I suspect it's just a speck. Maybe a spec-racer-Ford. They're pretty small. ;-)

Great scenery. This might be a good place to take it slow, just to enjoy the view.

I've driven on roads like that when I was in Arizona. There are roads from Phx to Vegas that are like that, especially if you do the trip during daytime on a weekday. Dead straight roads with no company. I've seen some numbskulls whizzing by at 100+ on some stretches. I wonder what kinda mpgs you'd get doing 100+ on a big chevy tahoe . Barely in the double digits would be my guess.

Absolutely. This road doesn't even look very well-suited for exceeding 55. I GIS'd "open road", and posted this one since it's so stunning to look at.

Having done the desert roads in Nevada/Arizona I'd wager the speed limit on that one is either 65 or 70. Also they're actually surprisingly dangerous stretches due to the high temperatures and subsequent heat haze you get on the road, it tends to hide oncoming cars. In Nevada there's a state law saying once outside of town you need to have your headlights on at all times, day or night, for that very reason.

If there is a speeding car in the desert and no one sees it is it speeding?

Sounds like 65 or 70 is a little generous in that case. I guessed 55 for this road since the terrain looks a little bumpy, the pavement is cracked, no shoulder, and the twists up ahead.

Fair point on the cracks. I based my speed estimate on U.S. 95 in Nevada, which is 70

Dusty is right, this is just outside the needles district in canyonlands and is really popular to shoot on, it 65

Looks like Monument Valley. Navajo Res. The cops there are real dicks. But they have few places to hide. If it is near where I think, the speed limit is 55 because of no shoulder. Not that that really makes much difference.

Kinja'd!!! desertdog5051 > Dusty Ventures
09/16/2013 at 01:02

It has shoulder. Big difference.

Only sometimes. The shoulder is intermittent between Tonopah and Mina. Can't remember what it's like between Mina and Hawthorne, I was pretty much asleep at that point.
